Home Hospital Beds for ARDS

Lung damage and tissue inflammation cause Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome. Symptoms include difficulty breathing, shortness of breath, and blue skin coloration. ARDS may lead to complications that involve the lungs, heart, circulatory system, nervous system, and brain.

ARDS is a serious condition with a high mortality rate. With proper treatment, ARDS sufferers may recover. However, there may be health consequences such as reduced strength, mobility, and endurance.

Doctors treat ARDS with ventilation, medication, and long-term bed rest. They may advise patients not to lie flat on their back (supine). Lying face-down—the prone position—can help to distribute oxygen through the lungs. Patients may also be positioned with their head raised above their feet with an adjustable bed’s head adjustment, foot adjustment, or tilt adjustment.

Patients with ARDS spend long periods in bed. Bedridden patients may develop bedsores, which are also called pressure ulcers or pressure sores. Pressure sores are a serious medical condition that causes discomfort and tissue damage.

Hospital beds should be used with a hospital bed mattress. Consumer mattresses are not designed to work with the adjustments of a home hospital bed.
