What Is the Resale Value of a Used Hospital Bed?

Home hospital beds are typically well-built, long-lasting pieces of medical equipment. If they are properly maintained, they have a useful lifespan of many years. While you or your loved one may no longer need their adjustable bed, there is almost certainly someone else who would be happy to have it.

In this article, we look at some of the ways you can ensure that your hospital bed goes on providing a valuable service once you no longer need it.

What Can I Do With an Old Hospital Bed?

Assuming a used hospital bed is in good working order, you have several options.

Donate It

A home hospital bed is beyond the means of many who might benefit from it. If you would like to donate your bed, consider contacting local churches, nursing homes, veterans organizations, and non-profit organizations that provide services for the elderly or injured, such as MED-EQ. If you prefer to donate directly, list your bed on Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist.

You could also create a post in a relevant Facebook Group, including groups for caregivers, older people, and people with specific conditions such as Alzheimer’s and arthritis. Alternatively, there may well be someone looking for a home hospital bed in your social circle or family.

Sell It

There is a market for premium pre-owned hospital beds, although you may face some challenges finding a buyer. We’ll look at some of the ways you can sell home hospital beds in the next section.

Whether you choose to donate or sell your bed, you should ensure that it is in good condition and that it has been thoroughly cleaned. You are unlikely to be able to donate or sell a hospital bed that is damaged or worn.

Where Can I Sell a Used Hospital Bed?

If you Google for used home hospital beds, you will find many businesses that refurbish and sell old medical equipment. However, they typically deal with larger organizations, buying used beds in bulk from care homes and hospitals.

Several specialist marketplaces sell medical equipment from individuals, such as MediBid, MedWOW, and Bimedis.  Although these marketplaces are widely used by medical practices and others looking for medical equipment, you may find more success selling directly to a buyer via a general-interest online marketplace such as eBay, Facebook Marketplace, or Craigslist.

How Much Is a Used Hospital Bed Worth?

How much your home hospital bed is worth depends on its features, age, and condition. A simple, low-cost home hospital bed without powered adjustments is unlikely to be worth much, and you may struggle to sell it at all. Premium home hospital beds with a range of powered head, foot, and height adjustments are much more attractive to second-hand buyers.

Age and condition are critical factors in the resale value. Buyers on the second-hand market are unenthusiastic about older models, especially if they are worn or in need of repair. Most are looking for lightly used beds in excellent condition.

Finally, you should be aware that although selling a home hospital bed is an option, there is no market for associated equipment such as bedding and mattresses. In fact, it is against the law to sell used mattresses in some states.
