How To Keep Sheets On An Adjustable Bed

Do you wake up in the morning to find that your sheets have untucked and bunched up underneath you?

Do your sheets pop off the mattress when you raise the head or foot adjustment of your bed?

These are common problems, but they’re easy to fix with the right sheets. In this article, we’ll take a look at problem sheets and what you can do to make sure your sheets stay tucked.

Untucked Sheets Can Be Dangerous

We have all experienced the annoyance of sheets that untuck in the night. As we move and change position, the sheets move with us. We wake up tangled in layers of fabric. The sheets ruck up underneath us, creating an uncomfortable sleeping surface.

For some adjustable bed users, loose sheets are more than just annoying—they’re dangerous. When people become tangled in sheets, they are more likely to fall when getting out of bed. People with conditions that reduce coordination or strength are especially at risk. For bedridden people, loose sheets increase the risk of bedsores and other skin damage.

In short, loose sheets should be avoided at all costs. Fortunately, it’s not difficult to buy sheets and accessories that help you to keep sheets in place.

Use the Right Sized Sheets

If you use unsuitable sheets on an adjustable hospital bed, they may come loose when you adjust the head or the foot of the bed. This is almost always because the sheets are the wrong size.

As we wrote in Hospital Bed Sheets Guide, adjustable beds should be used with sheets that are sized to account for the movement of the bed and mattress. As the head or foot of the bed is raised, the shape of the mattress changes. If the sheets are too tight, they may “pop off” the corners of the bed or gradually work themselves loose.

When you buy hospital bed sheets, ensure they are the right size for the bed. A home hospital bed may be longer or wider than an equivalent consumer bed. Transfer Master beds, including the Supernal 5, are 80 inches long in their default configuration. A standard twin bed is only 75 inches long. Sheets designed for these beds will not fit Transfer Master Twin 80 beds and may come loose when the bed is moved.

Most stores that sell bed linen stock 80-inch sheets. For twin beds, they may be called Twin Extra Long, Long Boys, or Twin 80s. Longer sheets are also available in other sizes.

Dual King beds require two bottom sheets, which can be bought separately or in split sheet packs. To get the right sheet size for Transfer Master Dual King beds, buy Twin 80s.

Fitted Sheets

Fitted sheets are elasticated at the edges so that they “grip” the mattress. They are less likely to be loosened by the movement of the bed’s occupant or by raising and lowering the bed’s adjustments.

Fitted sheets may be elasticated at the corners or all the way around the edge of the sheet. Sheets with elasticated corners may be suitable. But if you find that they still come loose, try fully elasticated sheets.

It should be emphasized that fitted sheets are not a substitute for buying sheets of the right size. If the sheets are too large, the excess material may be pulled loose. If they are too small, the elastic edges may work loose as the bed is adjusted.

Sheet Straps

Sheet straps are “suspenders for sheets.” There are many different types, but straps for fitted sheets typically clip on to the corners of the sheet beneath the mattress. They provide more stability than the elastic sheet edges alone.

For flat non-fitted sheets, you can buy straps that clip into each side of the sheet under the mattress, or criss-cross straps that attach to each corner across the diagonal length of the mattress.
