People with disabilities and seniors who use wheelchairs can now take advantage of a wheelchair taxi service that enables them to visit different places without relying on other people's help.
The Red WAVE (wheelchair accessibility vehicle and environment eco-friendly), which is slated to launch this Friday, can make a huge difference those who need help traveling from one place to another.
EZY MOV, India’s first wheelchair taxi service which was launched in 2015, teamed-up with Enable travel, which is the country's first holiday specialist for people with disabilities, and Swapna Health Care Services, the parent company of Red WAVE. The wheelchair taxis are Tata Winger vehicles that are modified to offer more mobility to people with disabilities.
Red WAVE plans to start in Jamshedpur with a couple of Tata Winger vehicles, each carrying a 17,00,000 INR price tag. Each Tata Winger vehicle can carry two passengers with disabilities, in addition to three other passengers and a driver.
There is a hydraulic system installed in the vehicle that can easily carry the wheelchair and keep them inside the car. To avoid any type of movement or bounce of wheelchair, there will a restraint belt which wheelchair user can be worn around the waist while the vehicle is on the road.
People with disabilities who are going to travel can easily enter the car independently, requiring just a helping-hand by the trained driver. In case if the passenger does not have a wheelchair, the Tata Winger provide them a spare wheelchair.
According to Sunil Kumar Dutta, the owner of Swapna Health Care Services and the initiator of this project, Jamshedpur is in need for more service like this as he knows someone who is very close to his heart who is a cardiac patient and wants to travel independently.
Increasing mobility in the lives of people with disabilities and aged patients is a big challenge, but there are not enough options. They don't want them to depend on someone else. Roaming somewhere with their families and enjoying their lives is the right of them.
There 25 vehicles in Mumbai and Goa which are modified by the EZY MOV. "But we are working on the tariff for Jamshedpur as rates of Mumbai and Goa won’t work here,” he said. “We are also giving free rides before the official launch. You can call it trial runs for feedback from potential users," Dutt added.
