New Emoji Update to Feature Wheelchair Users, Guide Dog, and Prosthetic Legs

Emojis continue to garner huge popularity among people from all around the world. They're a fun, easy way to express thoughts, emotions, and general feelings.

Given their wide-spread popularity among people of all ages, it's not surprising that they're consistently updating their offerings. Later this year, a whopping 230 new emojis are set to become available, including a man and woman in a wheelchair, prosthetic legs, a mechanical arm, a person who's hard of hearing, and a service dog in a harness.

Aside from that, the recently unveiled roster of emojis also includes a waffle, a falafel, garlic, a flamingo, a sloth, a person kneeling, and a yawning face just to name a few.

According to a report from FastCompany, women will finally be getting a menstruation emoji in the latest batch of emojis.

It is worth noting that The Unicode Consortium deemed these emojis samples, rather than the final versions.

Apple had suggested the mobility emojis in 2018, so they're largely to thank for these updates. The Cupertino tech giant's submission called for the “addition of emojis to better represent individuals with disabilities."

While the currently available emojis comprise a wide selection of options, they do not represent the experiences of differently-abled people.

Emojipedia suggests the new additions could arrive in April and continue through the end of 2019.
