If there is an institution of higher learning that has the interest of students with disabilities at heart, then it is the University of Maryland. The University of Maryland has partnered with their state government to set up a new center that will ease the transition of youth with disabilities from the college environment to the job market.
The Center for Transition and Career Innovation for Youth with Disabilities is accommodated by the University’s College of Education and it is steered by two researchers. The center is expected to cater for youth who are physically and intellectually disabled.
Richard Luecking, one of the researchers directing the center, said that they understand what is required to help youth with disabilities become successful adults. He acknowledged one challenge though: that of offering universal help so that all students with different disabilities can move forward successfully.
The announcement about the creation of the center was made by governor Larry Hogan. The governor expressed the commitment of their state to the improvement of the lives of persons with disability. He said that the new initiative will enable an increase in employment and a promotion of self-sufficiency among young adults with disabilities.
Luecking reiterated their commitment to give hope to all students and soon-to-be graduates with disabilities. He said that the purpose is to enable them to secure employment and develop their careers. He also emphasized that the center will focus on studying the things that will deliver on that noble purpose.
The center will focus on two main goals. One of which is to partner with state agencies in developing a database on services that would aid students with disabilities to move to the labor market and the other is to undertake research on how young adults with disabilities can succeed in their careers.
Luecking further revealed that the database will help them find out what happens to students in Maryland after leaving school and the reasons behind the happenings. The findings will help the state prepare a policy that will improve the chances of students with disabilities to move from school to employment and proceed with successful adult life.
