How does an adjustable bed help with acid reflux?

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) causes the contents of the stomach to re-enter the esophagus, which is sometimes called the food pipe or gullet. The stomach uses acid to digest food. The lining of the stomach is protected from the acid, but the esophagus is not. Reflux causes discomfort, pain (heartburn), and sometimes lasting damage.

Lying flat in bed often makes acid reflux worse. When you lie down, it is easier for acid and partially digested food to flow back into the esophagus. If your upper body is elevated, gravity makes it much harder for the stomach’s contents to reflux. An adjustable bed is a safe, comfortable, and easily controlled way to elevate your upper body while sleeping or during long-term bed rest.
