Startup Scores Big for a Disability-Friendly Idea

The Utah Entrepreneur Challenge has finally announced the winners of their annual student entrepreneurial competition. This year’s winning team came from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.

The Utah-based student startup Portal has received $40,000 at the recent 2018 Utah Entrepreneurial Challenge competition. The student startup has won the grand prize for an idea that addresses the mobility issues with wheelchairs.

Other winners include ProLink (second place) and BayWatch Technologies (third place). Runners-up have also received up to $80,000 in cash and in-kind prizes. Additional prizes were also awarded to the team with the best design, best presentation, best video, best technology feature and more.

About the winning team and the Utah Entrepreneurial Challenge

The student-run Utah Entrepreneurial Challenge is one of the largest student entrepreneurial cash prize competitions in the United States. Its main goal is to help students solve their problems as well as improve their entrepreneurial skills.

The student startup Portal invented a smart mobile app that addresses the major issue of automatic door opening buttons for people who use wheelchairs. This new app smartly opens the door if the user comes within range of the mobile app. The door remains open until the user has left the range of the mobile app. The newly developed app is expected to improve the lives of people with disabilities.

The Utah Entrepreneurial Challenge (UEC) is an annual, student-run entrepreneurial competition that encourages college and university students to submit their business ideas and plans for review. It gives promising Utah students the chance to bring their ideas into the business world.

Lassonde Entrepreneur Institute, an interdisciplinary division of the David Eccles School of Business, managed this huge, student-run event. The Utah Entrepreneurial Challenge is also sponsored by the Utah-based banking giant Zions Bank.
